Dear Community Business Owner,
It is a great pleasure to introduce to you our twenty-second season! Like every season, the MSO continues to break new ground and introduce new repertoire!
An American Premiere by an Argentine-American composer opens our season!Lalo Schifrin, known for his legendary film scores, such as Mission Impossibleand Bullitt, is also a wonderful concert music composer. His mandolin concerto has been commissioned by Europe’s foremost mandolinist, Vincent Beer-Demander, whose enthralling stage presence and virtuosity will certainly transport you. As a companion piece, we will play Nicolas Mazmanian’sMission Impossible Variations, and we will close the concert with Beethoven’s Olympian Symphony No. 7, which Wagner called “the apotheosis of dance”.
On our November program, we will present French pianist, Didier Castell-Jacomin, in one of Haydn’s seldom played, but beautiful piano concertos. Castell-Jacomin, a well-recorded artist, is a specialist of the classical repertoire of Mozart and Haydn in particular. We will also play Dvorak’s lush String Serenade as well as the American classic Appalachian Spring.
Our Holiday concert will feature celebrated bass-baritone Kevin Short, as well as several of his students from the prestigious University of Maryland Opera Studio. This year, in addition to the usual holiday season classics, we will also play great orchestrations from jazz to pop to put you in the holiday spirit!
For New Year’s Eve, be ready to be stunned by one of today’s foremost young sopranos, Rochelle Bard. She is one of the most versatile singers on the world stage today, and we can’t wait for you to hear her. Andrew Balio, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s principal trumpeter, will also help us ring in the New Year, with one of the sweetest trumpet sounds ever heard.
In March, the MSO will present the winner of its first Concerto Competition, along with Mozart’s Symphony No. 33, a great masterpiece that is so rarely played!
To conclude our season, we will play Darius Milhaud’s Creation of the World, certainly, one of the most fun French Jazzy pieces in the orchestral repertoire, followed by the iconic Piano Concerto No. 1 by Tchaikovsky, featuring Russian-born pianist Boris Slutsky. The great Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky, orchestrated by Maurice Ravel will close a season that we are so proud to present to you!
At this time, we would like to invite you to take the opportunity to be included in our concert Program books which will be distributed at each of our 15 concerts throughout the 2019-2020 concert season and reach approximately 4300 ticket holders.
