About the Winner

Joseph McNure, currently an M.M. Saxophone Performance student at UMD, College Park, has previously been a saxophone teacher in and around Harrisonburg City, Shenandoah County and Rockingham County. Students of Joseph are competitive players for All-State honors and Jazz auditions, as well as for collegiate schools of music. Joseph has been the lead player and a featured soloist with the JMU Jazz Ensemble alongside guest artists such as Greg Gisbert and Steve Wilson. Joseph has also performed with The Temptations and The Four Tops.

As a classical saxophonist, Joseph has placed first at the Penn State Undergraduate Single Reed Competition as well as performed with the JMU Wind Symphony for several years. Joseph is a member of the Iolite Saxophone Quartet, the second place winner for the Madison Chamber Ensemble Competition.

As an educator, Joseph is a licensed teacher in Virginia, and has diverse experience teaching in Albemarle, Shenandoah, and Rockingham counties. Joseph has taught music in special education at Central High School and was a Drum Major and teacher for the Marching Royal Dukes at James Madison University. Joseph routinely serves as a counselor and educator for the JMU Summer Band Camps.
