Meet one of our Freeman Stage Soloist: Henrique Carvalho, Baritone
On Saturday, June 19th at 7 PM at the Freeman Arts Pavilion the powerful voices of the Washington Opera Society will join the formidable Mid-Atlantic Symphony, under the fiery direction of Maestro Julien Benichou, for an evening of great opera!
Though born in São Paulo, Brazil, Baritone Henrique Carvalho has spent the majority of his life in the United States. Growing up speaking Portuguese at home and English at school allowed him to develop a keen ear for language and sound. This blended in with an ever-present interest in music and resulted in dedicating his life to singing.
During his time at the University of Maryland pursuing a Bachelor’s in Voice Performance under the tutelage of bass-baritone Kevin Short, he sang in various performances ranging from solos in Bach cantatas, to the title role in a student-run production of Thomas Pasatieri’s opera Signor Deluso. He was asked to coach the UMD Concert Choir in singing Brazilian Portuguese to prepare for a performance of Choros No.10 by Heitor Villa-Lobos with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra conducted by Marin Alsop in March 2019. Additionally, he had the opportunity to spend a month abroad that same year as a participant of Musiktheater Bavaria, a summer program based in Oberaudorf, Germany, where he performed in concerts of opera scenes and arias. Henrique also performs locally in Washington, DC, has been a featured soloist with the Southern Maryland Youth Orchestra, and will be a member of the Maryland Opera Studio starting Fall 2021.
