Singaporean pianist Jonah Kwek believes that music can be a powerful and meaningful life-giving force, and is on a mission to share this with the world through his manifold and authentic interactions with his audiences. Since beginning his musical journey at the tender age of 4, Jonah has achieved numerous accolades and performed extensively both locally and internationally as a soloist and collaborative musician.
A passionate and dedicated musician, Jonah’s achievements include winning the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music’s (YST) Concerto Competition in 2021, performing Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1 in D Minor. Most recently, he and his duo partner Kennis Ang, emerged as the National 1st Prize Winners in the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Stecher and Horowitz Two Piano Competition 2024. Jonah has also taken part in many masterclasses with renowned pianists such as Arie Vardi, Jerome Lowenthal, Stephen Hough and Arnaldo Cohen.
Jonah also takes great pride in collaborating with other musicians. A diverse and seasoned collaborative pianist, he performs actively as a piano duo with his fellow Singaporean pianist Kennis Ang, and with other chamber groups and instrumentalists. He has also taken part in chamber masterclasses with distinguished chamber groups such as the Calefax Reed Quintet and Decoda, and was chosen to represent YST at the Musical Chairs Chamber Music Festival 2022 at the Schulich School of Music, with his chamber group Synthe6 (YST Wind Sextet). Jonah also performs actively as a harpsichordist with the Baltimore Baroque Band.
A multi-faceted musician, Jonah is also enthusiastic in performing other genres of music such as Asian Cultural Music, Film Music, Musical Theatre, Jazz and Pop. He has worked frequently with ensembles such as the Asian Cultural Symphony Orchestra (ACSO), Ding Yi Music Company and the Orchestra of the Music Makers (OMM) in Singapore. Furthermore, Jonah transcribes and arranges his own piano covers, performing them at various events and uploading his covers to YouTube. He is also proficient in arranging music for various instrumental settings such as orchestras, chamber groups and choirs.
Jonah graduated from YST, National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2023, with a First Class Honours (Highest Distinction) under the tutelage of Steinway Artist, Dr. Thomas Hecht. He was a recipient of the prestigious Steven Baxter Memorial Scholarship, which was awarded to him based on his outstanding performance and achievements in the Conservatory. He was also awarded the Dean's List for every semester in his undergraduate studies for academic excellence. Prior to this, Jonah was enrolled in YST’s Young Artist Programme, offered to students with outstanding performance abilities until enrolment into the Bachelor of Music (Hons) programme.
Jonah is currently pursuing a Master of Music Degree at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University under the tutelage of Steinway Artist, Dr. Steven Spooner. He continues to pursue piano duo under the guidance of Dr. Thomas Hecht.
