Meet Anna Kelly, Mezzo-Soprano and New Year's Eve Soloist

Praised as having a “rich,” “even,” and “beautifully emotional” sound, Anna Kelly is up-and-coming mezzo originally from Atlanta, GA. Formerly of Catholic University in Washington DC, from which she holds a Bachelor of Music (’19) degree, Anna Kelly is a recent graduate of the Yale School of Music, where she completed her Masters of Music (’22) and is completing her Master of Musical Arts.
While at the Yale School of Music, Ms. Kelly was cast as Ruggiero in Yale Opera’s spring 2022 production of Alcina, and in past seasons as Elisa (Lucia di Lammermoor), Dorabella (Cosi fan tutte), Octavian, (Der Rosenkavelier), Le Prince Charmant (Cendrillon), Smeton (Anna Bolena), Isolier (Le Comte Ory), Sesto (La Clemenza di Tito*), Siebel (Faust*) and Cherubino (Le nozze di Figaro*) in Yale Opera’s 2020-2022 scenes and gala performances.
In addition to her opera gala performances with the Yale Opera and the Yale Philharmonia (February 2022) and her chamber music performances with Yale Orchestra (as the soprano II soloist in Mozart’s C minor mass, fall 2021), Ms. Kelly will solo this year with the Connecticut-based Waterbury Symphony Orchestra (May and December 2022), and the Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra (June and December 2022). After her winning performance at the Gulf Coast Regional for the Metropolitan Opera Laffont competition, Ms. Kelly was invited back to New Orleans by the New Orleans Chapter of the Friends of the Metropolitan Opera Competition organization and will present a solo recital in fall 2022. During last fall’s 2021 season, Ms. Kelly performed with New Music New Haven and was the mezzo soloist in the live premiere of David Lang’s “let me come in” (2020).
Ms. Kelly has also been a participant in several young artists programs, and has received recognition from multiple musical organizations and competitions. In 2022, Ms. Kelly was a National Semifinalist with the Metropolitan Opera’s Laffont Competition, and will be a studio artist at the Music Academy of the West, where she will perform in their production of Eugene Onegin. In 2020, Ms. Kelly was a participant in the Houston Grand Opera Young Artists’ Vocal Academy (YAVA), and was a regional winner and National Semifinalist for the 2021 National Association of Teachers of Singing competition. In prior years, Ms. Kelly has won vocal competition scholarships from the Presser Foundation for Musical Philanthropy, the Friday Morning Music Club, and the Schmidt Vocal Competition, as well as from the National Society for the Daughters of the American Revolution.
